Why should military guns and tanks, air force planes and missiles, be moved away from public spaces? Simply because times have changed. This isnt the age to display war machines even those that mark great wars and brave victories. As the 700-odd graves of the abandoned and forgotten soldiers right behind the ASC Officers Mess at Agram Cemetery tell us, war produces heroes that go unsung.

Were all aware of the 60s but Vinod lived it, and gives us an intimate account about it. (I would have accused him of bragging about his Nordic conquests, except that he confesses to having fathered a half-Swiss daughter, and to having wretchedly treated his girlfriend who refused to get an abortion. I hope an extract of Lucknow Boy is published in a Swiss newspaper so that Vinod gets to meet his daughter someday.) One aspect of the 60s London was the robust magazine tradition and the back of the book sections in New Statesman and the like: Vinods genius was to recognise how 1970s Bombay was ready for similar back-of-the-book reading. So he jumped upon the opportunity afforded by Debonair.

The writer, executive editor, Verve, is, in her personal space, often driven to distraction by her two growing young adults, but she loves the madness of it allThe spectacular electoral success of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) led by Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh has created new interest in Dalit movements across the country. The victory of the BSP is especially significant because it occurred in UP, not a state known for cordial caste relationships. Moreover, it was against formidable entrenched forces that also utilise, overtly and covertly, politics of caste identity. It is also remarkable in the fact that a Dalit organisation was able to get out of the limitations of support from a particular caste (or even a cluster of socially similarly placed castes) and attract votes from across the social spectrum. For the first time, a party clearly representing the oppressed sections — in caste terms — was able to overcome electoral isolation and project itself as the ruling party of all the people of the state. All political parties and organisations have taken note of this development. Some do so with cautious approval and others with trepidation. Secondly, a number of Dalit organisations in different states have become enthused and eager to try out the ‘Mayawati pattern’ in their states. The responses evoke the question whether the success of the BSP in the UP elections is a product of specific circumstances and factors that operate in the state or signifies a general nationwide phenomenon. Three questions arise. First, whether the BSP victory is a result of factors operating at the time of those elections in UP or the fruition of a stable, long-term social and political trend in the state. Second, so far the BSP has only recorded a presence in states other than UP but has not become a significant force in either electoral or non-electoral arenas. Third, the UP success may indicate a secular and democratic advance in breaking the class-caste confinement of BSP but whether the BSP is able to grasp and build on such a trend, only time will tell. These questions become significant because the Dalit movement has neither an all India character nor uniformity. After Dr Ambedkar, the Dalit movement has been an occasional protest movement that generally seeks to defend some specific interests. The agenda of annihilation of caste seems somewhat eclipsed, overtaken by competitive caste consolidation. The cultural upsurge, exhibited particularly in Maharashtra in the 1970s’, has also to a large extent subsided. It no longer fuels social and political developments. It is also argued that a differentiation is now evident within the Dalit ranks, and the interests of different sections differ from each other. The masses are perhaps waiting for new analyses, leadership patterns, and organisational structures. In some areas of some states, they have grown closer to Naxalite organisations. A flux characterises the Dalit movement today which has over the years accumulated intellectual, cultural and organisational expertise. The challenge before it now is social and political — of making the original vision of Dr Ambedkar once again relevant to the present times in an appropriate form. Pendse is an independent researcher and writerA Thousand Splendid SunsKhaled HosseiniBloomsbury372 pagesRs495Haunting, lyrical, and yet slightly flawed, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is also — surprisingly — a page-turner. It is essentially a story of two women, of how their individual destinies bring them together, and of how they manage to rediscover humanity in a hostile world. But it is in the telling of the story that Hosseini triumphs. His narrative, though occasionally melodramatic and structurally weak, is magnetic. He keeps you riveted as he sweeps through his tale. When Nana, a maid in wealthy Jalil’s house becomes pregnant with his child, Jalil blames her. But he also sets Nana and his daughter Mariam up in a hut, and looks after their basic needs. He visits fifteen-year-old Mariam often. Childlike, she trusts what she sees: and that is a cantankerous, bitter mother on the one hand, and a dapper, charming father on the other. The first part of the book is a beguiling study of how appearances can be skin-deep, and the terrible cost that Mariam pays to discover the truth. With Mariam’s marriage to the 45-year-old Rasheed, the story gradually shifts to the family of her neighbour — a teacher called Babi, his wife Fariba and their daughter Laila. While Babi is an enlightened, loving father, Fariba is pining for her sons who have left to fight the Soviets. Between Babi and Laila’s best friend Tariq, Laila has a reasonably happy childhood. Things change when the Soviets leave the country. The jehadis turn out to be unruly gunmen who, with no enemy left to target, turn against one another. Laila’s life falls apart, and she is forced to marry Rasheed.Mariam and Laila grow to accept and then love each other, and even try to run away from Rasheed’s violence. With arrival of the Taliban and their hysterical rule, Afghanistan is pushed into chaos and conservatism. In the final chapters, things are resolved: Laila finds happiness; the Taliban are routed, and life returns to a semblance of normalcy.Hosseini’s triumph lies in the simplicity and energy of his storytelling. He manages to tell the story of a torn, beautiful land through the lives of ordinary people. History, though pivotal, is never entirely foregrounded here. It literally seeps into the narrative, slowly permeating and then completely vitiating the air that the characters breathe. His moving descriptions of Afghanistan show us a place that is at once ancient, magnificent, sad and stark. Unlike novels like The Reluctant Fundamentalist, where theorising often passes for fiction, Hosseini’s book gets under the skin of the situation. In part, this is thanks to the rich details that pepper the narrative. There is a description of a Kabul where entertainment is banned, and watching Titanic becomes an obsession. Surreally, shops begin to sell things which are all branded ‘Titanic’ — from Titanic carpets and deodorants to Titanic burqas. There are hospitals where women get fewer facilities and female doctors have to operate with burqas on; there are families reduced to penury because women aren’t allowed to work. The complete irrationality of fundamentalism stands revealed. In contrast, both traditional society and Communist rule — whatever their individual faults — seem giddily liberal and kind. Unlike in Kite Runner, Hosseini’s first novel, A Thousand… has a greater sense of feminine spaces, of the world of women. The characterisations are more mature as well. On the flip side, Hosseini’s writing can be patchy. There are evocative, understated and inspired bits, and then suddenly, there is pure melodrama. The sense of impending doom is also reminiscent of a 1960s Hindi film, where everything that can go wrong, unfailingly does. Rasheed, the villainous husband, could be regarded as a symbol of all that is restrictive and cruel about patriarchic societies everywhere. But his belligerence seems uni-dimensional sometimes. Structurally, the jumps from the life of one woman to the other are not always well-orchestrated. The near-miraculous twist at the end resolves things, but it also feels pat. What rescues the book finally is the fact that Hosseini’s people are all real, powerless and flawed. Like people everywhere, they are struggling to make sense of their lives. Only, they are doing so in a society that is falling apart and losing its moorings both traditional and modern. Which makes their life-stories at once frightening, poignant and rich.I am in Beatles land, attending a session of the European Cultural Parliament. Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture this year, so the session is being held here. Unlike a regular Parliament session, this is a series of discussions and workshops where people from around the world try to find answers to troubling questions. Most participants, barring a few oddballs like yours truly, are all from Europe — a heady mix of ambassadors, politicians, artists, writers, scholars, musicians, dancers, architects and other cultural figures. And we are debating how culture and media can strengthen democracy in Europe. Democracy could certainly do with some nurturing at this age of paranoia. And it is great to see culture and media take centrestage in deliberating Europe’s future. Till now we have primarily seen trade talks and political dialogues, focused mainly on who to include and who to leave out from the European Union and economic policies. So an attempt to define a cultural identity for Europe was exciting. The European project, the EU has officially declared, is a cultural project, a grand work in progress, more a process than a product. And since media and culture are catalysts of democratic growth, focusing on these would enrich the process. Journalism stimulates communities to participate in democracy, and the arts can create a common public space. These help in building a cultural identity, which would be essential if Europe is to be defined in cultural terms. As we discuss the importance of the arts, of a free press, pluralism and diversity, the media’s role and other clearly top of the heap issues for the cultural policy makers of Europe, I feel rather smug about my homeland. For ages we have balanced various religious, cultural, linguistic and regional identities to be comfortable as Indians. Maybe our rich cultural heritage had something to do with it. And the fact that the Indian media is one of the best in the world. Our press is passionately critical, combative, entertaining (far too much, lately), thought-provoking and free. Not as free as one may wish, given the increasing control of politics and business interests on media, but certainly free from government control. In one workshop, we discuss intercultural dialogue — and focus squarely on ‘Islamic culture’ versus ‘atheist Europe’. How can Europe have a dialogue with ‘the other’, lament some discussants, if there is nothing to learn from ‘the other’? I try to explain how intercultural dialogue is a routine process in pluralistic countries, how we do it all the time, every day, in India, where our personal cultural background doesn’t offer a barrier to communication till we choose to make it one. And that there is no one ‘Islamic culture’ out there — there are a variety of Islamic cultures, just as there is no single ‘atheist Europe’ and unless the West sees that, there can never be a solution to the problem. Besides, you can never have a dialogue if you are convinced that you have nothing to learn from ‘the other’. Also, isn’t it time you stopped thinking of Muslims and their culture as ‘the other’, given the increasingly discontented Muslim population in Europe? “Shut up, girl,” says a voice in my head. “You construct ‘the other’ too. And your wonderful civil society allows Indian Christians and Indian Muslims to be slaughtered, low caste Indians to be tormented and killed, Indians from Bihar and UP to be attacked ruthlessly in Mumbai — where the heck is your grand tradition of inclusive bonding, of tolerance and mutual understanding?” I shut up. We have certainly lost the edge on pluralism and diversity. Oh well. I step out in search of the girl with kaleidoscope eyes. This is Liverpool, after all. The writer is editor, The Little Magazine. Email:In the first episode of Girls, the American television show that won five nominations in this years Emmy Awards, the heroine Hannah is “cut off” by her parents. This means not relying on mum and dad for money and being financially independent as she tries to fulfil her dream of being an author in New York. Despite a lot of lows and a few highs, Hannah doesnt leave New York even though it would be cheaper and more comfortable to live with her parents in their small town. Chances are, every single woman who has survived in a big city, whether in Brooklyn or Borivli, will be able to relate with Hannahs predicament.

Before one proceeds, what exactly are national interests? Is it the right of the Hindutva groups to loot and plunder and maim and kill without trial? Is it the right of Muslim fundamentalists to attack and beat and remain outside the law? Is it the right of the police to kill innocent persons in the name of the law? Is it the right of mafias and mobs to attack and murder those exposing corruption? Is it the right of the army to pick up young men, to rape and kill without accountability? Is it the right of the state to indulge in terrible violence to counter violence? Does all this strengthen the nation, or plunge it into chaos and violence and insecurity?

Xavi insisted this setback will inspire Vilanovas Barcelona for bigger and better things in the future. But with the midfielder placed at 33 years of age, now is perhaps the time Barcelona should start planning. They do have a youthful look about them at most positions on the pitch but to stay put with the philosophy of Barca, you need to find an exceptional talent in the midfield over the next couple of seasons who can compose a symphony in sync with maestros such as Messi and Andres Iniesta. And in this context, the role of Cesc Fabregas is going to be critical.

The good part was the 56% rise in underlying profits to ?475m. “Underlying” in this context is not a gratuitous presentational wheeze. It includes provisions. The biggest swing factor was a ?165m hit from hedging instruments, against a small gain a year ago. But it’s fair to look beyond one year’s hedging outcome since the numbers tend to net out at roughly zero over time.
